Why Is My Vision Blurry?

Why is my vision blurry?

This is a question that many people ask, and can cause distress for those experiencing it - especially if it is something new.

There are multiple reasons why this might occur and the best thing you can do to get to the source of why this is happening to you is to go see an experienced optometrist.

The majority of blurry eyes are caused from:

Myopia (nearsightedness) - we are seeing this rate growing very quickly, especially amongst younger patients. Many theories surround why this is happening; a big one being the amount of time spent inside and on screens because the focal point kiddos look at is so near to their eyes, and they don’t use the eye muscles nearly enough to see far and look out into the distance. Most myopia stems from the following: genetrics, environmental factors, eye shape, other health problems or eye injury.

Presbyopia - This blurred vision generally occurs as people age because their eye lens loses flexibility. Fine print, small labels and things like menus become difficult to read. People mostly start to notice this after age 40. It can be corrected with prescription eyewear and is part of the normal aging process. There are other factors that can contribute to this which include: medications and other medical conditions (multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular conditions and diabetes.)

Astigmatism - this blurred vision can occur because of a change in your eyeball shape. Think of your eyeball as a soccer ball and then if astigmatism starts to occur that ball gets squished almost into more of a football shape. (American football that is.) The way that light and images are projected and processed in your vision system become more difficult and blurred vision can result.

Hyperopia (farsightedness) - This is a condition that happens when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat. It is usually a hereditary condition causing blurred vision and most people who have it are born with it.

Other causes of blurred vision can be:

Eye infections

Underlying health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure

And Dry Eyes
