Are Blue Light Blocking Glasses Worth It?

On Screens? Do you Need Special Glasses?

Are blue light blocking glasses worth it? Computer glasses? What’s the difference? How do I know what I need? In this blog we cover what the experts know, and what’s worth spending your money on.

Research has shown that blue blocking glasses actually aren’t worth spending money on. Blue blocking glasses generally have a coating overlaid on the lenses that won’t allow blue light through to your eyeballs. Although blue light has been shown to disrupt circadian rhythms and affect sleep, having those glasses on while you use screens to block blue light just isn’t worth it. Blocking blue light alone has not been shown to help relieve eye strain, or impact the way your eyes work.

Computer glasses however; with lenses that correct for the intermediate-distance viewing when at a desktop or laptop, do make a pretty significant impact on how you will feel. The biggest change is that the lenses in computer glasses allow for the small muscles in and surrounding your eyes to relax. Computer glasses alone won’t completely fix eye-strain if you are on a screen for hours. The biggest thing that will make a difference for you is to take breaks.

Welcome to the 20/20/20 eye rule that us in the optometry world would love everyone to follow:

Every 20 minutes look up for 20 seconds at least 20 feet into the distance.

Following that rule you will allow your eye muscles a break. Somewhat akin to holding a weight for a long period and giving your body a break to rest (think about taking off a large, heavy backpack…but for your eyes.)

If you find that continuously being on screens is causing you issues that computer glasses aren’t helping with, we have other technology in-office that might be able to help. There are new lenses that help with eyestrain relief. This new technology is called Neurolens and we are proud to offer screening for it in-office. Neurolens helps by correcting with a unique contoured, prism lens design to optimize the way your brain and eyes work together. Patients have reported significant resolution of issues like headaches, neck pain and eye strain by wearing neurolenses (calibrated to them individually.)

We assess your need for neurolens by using a VR headset in-office. It is an easy 5 minute test that is able to track how your eyes are working and measure the results in a way that translates into eyewear lenses that can make a difference.

There are many different ways of relieving eye strain, especially if you are someone on screens for long periods. The best way to cover all the options that are available to you is to come into the office and be assessed by our expert.
